This volume contains the work of three fifteenth-century gentlemen poets who hailed from the Clwyd and Conwy valleys. Ieuan ap Llywelyn Fychan was the father and grandfather of poets, and was addressed by Tudur Aled as ‘teacher’. The second poet, Lewys Aled, also a gentleman poet, was related to Tudur Aled. Both these poets composed love poems. Ieuan Llwyd Brydydd, on the other hand, sang interesting poems to some of the chief patrons of north Wales. In the words of Thomas Parry: ‘It is this general interest in literature, together with the technical accomplishment and beauty of the art, which makes the period of the nobility so brilliant an epoch, if not the most brilliant of all, in the history of Welsh literature.’
