A talented and imaginative poet from the latter half of the fifteenth century, Llywelyn ap Gutun is associated with the north-east borders of Powys. A harpist by profession, he also turned his hand to poetry and eighteen of his works have survived. Satire and bardic debate are his main themes, but he also composed poems on love and other matters, including a powerful elegy on the death of his young son. In addition to playing the harp and versifying, this fearless and impetuous man also wandered the length and breadth of Wales, bartering his labour for lambs and much else besides, his adventures and exploits infusing his work with added interest and entertainment.
